At the mention of thespian Chua Enlai and the
couch potato image of a messy, harassed guy in the IKEA advertisement
going " wo zhen de bu zhi dao" - (I really don't know)
will surface. If you want to know what lies in the cupboard and
mind of winner for Best Actor for 2002 DBS Life! Theatre Awards,
then follow reporter Melissa Chin as she enjoys his email.
1. Whose designs do you swear by?
I'm not fussy and am no slave to labels but I
do appreciate a Marc
Jacobs or a Miu Miu when
I see one. Casual labels? Totally dig Adidas
and Puma.
2. What is the most essential style piece in
your wardrobe?
At the moment, my black Havaianas.
We rehearse barefoot a lot, so these sturdy yet cushy flip-flops
come to the rescue so easily, during that urgent loo and smoke breaks.
3.
Of which of your acquisitions are you most proud?
A Calvin Klein Boxer Brief for every day of the
month, in impeachable tones of black, white and grey. Man's best
friend, really Oh?! Was I supposed to say my dark brown Gucci
suit? OK then that too.
4. What is your favourite accessory?
I'm quite a bag person. Not so much by quantity,
but by their recognisably humungous size! I always have a jacket
for the theatre or cinema, diary, change of clothes, shoes, toiletry
kit, hair goop, hand cream, kitchen sink etc I actually have
a car to put it all in yet I persevere in giving myself a bad back
in my old age. At the moment, the culprit is a maroon Puma bowling
bag, which is temporarily attached to my right arm.
5. Which is your favourite shopping haunt?
I like shopping overseas because of the pressure
of "quick buy now because maybe got no time to come back here!"
And if you buy something real cheap somewhere out there in the great
wide open, you don't have to admit you shop at Metro
or This Fashion. I actually
walked into Woods & Woods
the other day. I don't own anything from them, but I like their
stuff!! I think the vintage stuff you get in Newtown in Sydney or
maybe New York, is really, really cool. By the way, I LOVE Urban
Outfitters!! Let me say that again. I LOVE Urban Outfitters!!
6.Whose
wardrobe would you like to raid?
Tom
Ford always looks so irritatingly well dressed. While I wouldn't
exactly raid their wardrobes, I think Bjork,
Chloe Sevigny
and Sarah
Jessica Parker have the guts to look so fantastical and fabulous.
By the way, who saw Mariah Carey's
wardrobe in MTV Cribs
Golly Gosh!
7. What was your best fashion moment?
You can't be serious?!
8. What beauty item can't you live without?
I use lots of Clinique
stuff for my face like Total Turnaround and Moisture Surge Light.
They're great. But I really can't live without hand cream. Kiehls
and Neutrogena are the best!
9. Okay then, for someone who announces that
he's "Handsome" in an IDD commercial, what's your secret
beauty tip?
Bathing yourself in milk freshly procured from
a cow's udder If that's a tough call, moisturise, moisturise,
moisturise! Says someone who has eczema. I'm totally serious.
10. Which fragrance do you swear by?
The manly, hairy aroma which emanates from my
armpits ok lah, ok lah! I like Clinique Happy for men and
Armani Mania.
11. And your favourite way to start the day?
You really wanna know?! It may be far too rude
;-) OK, the PG version is a glass of juice (mango or orange),
a cup of coffee and a slow flip through the papers. That's why I'm
always late!
12. What are you currently reading?
A couple of scripts for some plays I may be doing
later on in the year - can't really say what they are though, so
what's the point?! So let's say this Taschen-issued coffee table
book "Pop
Art", by Tilman Osterwold. Love it. Lots of pictures and
lots of words too ;-) (Just joking, ok!)
Hate to sound boring, but it's the Big
Apple for the REAL big city buzz. But Marrakesh
too, is a lovely place that I've had the privilege to visit.
16. Which restaurant left the best impression
on you?
Used to patronise Mezza9
quite a bit, and have tried Whitebait
& Kale and Marmalade
Pantry. They're great 'cos they've got the vibe I like. But
I just like wearing my slippers down to Tango's at Holland Village
for their chicken wings and wines at happy hour prices! Very casual
and no fuss, and that's what's important.
17. Who would you like to meet?
I want to sit down and have a martini with Richard
Branson because I want to be a travel mogul in my next life;
one who knows how to rip Singapore
Airlines off!!
18. What will you never do?
Bungee jump (even though I grew up in New Zealand),
and wear pink and green together, in one ensemble.
Plenty! Many involve various substances
regurgitating themselves through various orifices of mine at the
most untimely moments and another, is hugely ripped trousers (crotch
area) at a very glamorous awards ceremony. 'Nuff said. Can crawl
back into a hole and die!
