NKF Charity Show Part 2

Young & Dangerous

MediaCorp artistes lived a dangerous life for 3 hours at the NKF Charity Show, raising $6.4 million in total.

It was literally an edgy night. Some MediaCorp artistes lived life on the edge for 3 hours, performing cool stunts such as balancing on the edge of a pole in mid-air and grabbing the edges of sharp knives.

Caldecott Hill didn't turn Cirque du Soleil or the Buffalo Bill's Wild West show overnight. But our often-glamorous and extravagant local celebrities became good Samaritans by performing entertaining yet risky acts at the 2nd of the 2-parter NKF Charity Show on April 18, raising $6.4 million in call donations. UrbanWire witnessed the event live at the MediaCorp Studio (including the outdoor event at Bishan) and survived those nasty scares to tell the circus tales.

Facing the Music

They call themselves "Singapore's 2 horniest men" and aptly so. Gurmit Singh and Mark Lee performed a hilarious segment by pressing horns attached to various parts of their bodies, creating melodies of classical songs. They had the audience clapping and thumbing their phones to a fine tune of 90,000 calls. For the record, both horny men were dressed in tight suits, so there wasn't any funny business going on. Cheeky Boy
Tay Ping Hui is a tough nut to crack. He lay down on pins and had concrete slabs placed on him during the show. In fact, new MediaCorp artiste Michelle Chong also reclined on the concrete slabs, increasing the weight and pressure on Ping Hui. And the hunky star starring in the Chan 8 show Spice Siblings, exclaimed "nothing" went on his mind during the stunt to this reporter. Of course, he continued saying that the NKF patients were always on his mind.

But what you've seen on television was nothing compared to the rehearsals he had for the "past few weeks". He injured himself once when a sharp pin "pricked [his] butt cheek" but it has healed already. Girls, try not to entertain any cheeky thoughts.[^top]

Fann Stands Tall on Yu Wu

Fly Me to the Moon
Add Fann Wong and Qi Yu Wu together and you get a fine balance, literally. In a somewhat similar performance last year together with "good friend" Christopher Lee, this time Fann collaborates with Yu Wu to walk and balance themselves on poles in mid air at an open field outside Bishan Junction 8. The stunt kept the 200-people crowd (including Fann's Fannatic Fan Club) at the field holding their breaths. Ting Ting, 17, a club member who was at the field "since 4pm" and who has "made 3 calls" in support of her idol Fann, "felt very frantic when she was up there".

Fann herself was a bundle of nerves too. She jested, "I was cursing and swearing when I was up there because it was difficult to have eye contact [with Yu Wu] and I said, 'Please God, just get me to the middle'." Fann was equally nervous before she went on, only catching "4 hours of sleep the day before" and "going to the temple to pray in the morning". Her prayers were answered - she was safe and the stunt received 84,691 calls. [^top]

Sharp Knifes and Looks

I'd asked Zoe Tay why her fellow colleagues and artistes shuffled the hidden knifes instead of them getting the audience to shuffle the hidden knifes for more credibility. To which, she replied, "I never thought of asking the audience, but you can see it for yourself. There weren't any marking on the paper hiding the knives." If looks could kill…

Whether or not it was on the level, it was definitely the most dangerous stunt of the night and no wonder it was kept till the finale. Zoe had to guess which were the hidden knives and avoid cutting her hand as she uncovered them swiftly. Kudos must be given to the Queen of Caldecott Hill for her brave spirit in performing the stunt, and it wasn't a surprise when Zoe revealed that she "hasn't told her husband [because he's away on assignment] about the stunt and doesn't intend to tell him in future!" The stunt pulled off 182,113 calls and I survived the stare to tell the tale. [^top]
