Sip your Cosmopolitans, strap on your Manola Blahniks
and get ready to paint the town red as the 6th and final season
of Sex and the City
(SATC) draws to a close 22nd Feb in true Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah
Jessica Parker) style - heavy on sex, relationships and love.
The final season brings new characters and new twists to the series
with Miranda (Cynthia
Nixon) and Steve's (David
Eigenberg) surprise reunion and wedding, Samantha's (Kim
Cattrall) battle with breast cancer, the introduction of pet
Princess Dandyridge Brandywine, and a sexy and illusive artist,
Alexandr Petrovsky (Mikhail
Baryshnikov).

Carrie's Choice
It's
no wonder that SATC fans are on the edge of their seats, what with
the new additions to the cast and unexpected goings-on that leave
us anticipating the season's grand finale that will finally answer
6 seasons' worth of questions for protagonist Carrie Bradshaw -
Will she choose Dolce & Gabanna or Prada? Will she be a singleton
or hear wedding bells? Is it Mr Big or Petrovsky? And of course,
what will she wear, Jimmy Choos or Manola Blahniks?
As things are finally settling down at Hotel Petrovsky,
with the successful move from Loverville to Relationshipville, we
could have told you that the notorious heart-breaking and confounding
Mr Big (Chris
Noth) would make a comeback into Carrie's life by leaving numerous
"Call me" messages on her answering machine. We all know
where those seemingly innocent messages in the past have led to
- relationship hell.
What's different now is that Carrie seems too
in love with her Russian lover to care. Of course that won't affect
Mr Big's definite return in the last 4 episodes. Your guess is as
good as mine but for good television, I'd say that Big's re-entrance
will cause buried feelings to surface thus bringing Carrie back
to the square one she often finds herself in - being in love with
the non-committal Mr Big. His frequent claims to "have changed"
often prove otherwise.
Unlikely, but not to be overlooked is the possible
re-appearance of the sweet and sentimental Aidan Shaw (John
Corbett) re-kindling what probably was Carrie's most honest
and meaningful relationship. Carrie who has had her share of bad
relationships - including being dumped on a post-it - might for
once be confused and torn apart with choices.
Be it Big or Aidan, whatever twists and turns
the show may take, it is likely that she will re-visit what she
regards as Manhattan's favourite hang-out - denial. In the oft-heard
words of columnist Carrie Bradshaw: "I can't help but wonder
"
- The many possible surprise endings that will leave fans guessing
which lover or ex-lover Carrie will end up with, if anyone. However,
one must not assume that her search will end hand-in-hand with the
show. The cynic in me guesses that the season will end off with
Carrie alone in her apartment, writing her column on her laptop
how she will not settle for less than true love.
The Other 3
Let's not forget the others in the SATC foursome - Samantha Jones
(Kim Cattrall),
Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia
Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin
Davis) -who have dealt with drastic changes in their lives in
recent episodes.
Samantha has to face breast cancer and the side
effects of chemotherapy - hair loss - a traumatic blow to a vain
Samantha whose hair is her "thing". To get her life back
under control, Samantha shaves her locks, but she isn't alone. Her
sweet boyfriend Smith Jerrod (Jason
Lewis) did the same for her. Despite him being over 10 years
younger, Smith has proved to be the boyfriend Samantha needed. It
must be a mean feat tying down a non-monogamist, but my prediction
is wedding bells.
With Miranda's unexpected proposal to Steve Brady
(David Eigenberg),
the newly weds have squeezed themselves, including Scout the dog,
Fatty the cat and baby Brady, in Miranda's tiny flat. Reluctantly,
they move to Brooklyn so there'd be a little more room for Brady.
My frivolous guess is that in the last few episodes, Miranda and
Steve will get a false scare when Brady gets hurt or goes missing
and that will pull them together as a family, happily ever after.
Charlotte and Harry Goldenblatt (Evan
Handler) have been trying for a baby ever since they got married
last season, but to no avail. The entrance of her terrier Princess
Dandyridge Brandywine, who Charlotte renamed 'Elizabeth Taylor',
has cheered Charlotte up over not being able to have kids. However,
my prediction is that Charlotte and Harry will adopt a beautiful
little girl in the episodes that follow - Harry was looking into
other options, adoption being one of them.
Curtain Call
Sex and the City has been running for 6 seasons and each season
has been filled with different surprises, taking fans through the
long and winding road in the life of 4 single Manhattan women. It
has brought to life the reality of being 35 (which thankfully for
many of us is still some way off), single in a big city and the
entire stigma that comes with it. This 21st century cosmo- girl
power show has a substantial Singaporean following despite it never
being aired here (don't ask me how half of Singaporean women manage
to watch them).
The time will come soon to say goodbye to Jimmy Choos, D&G,
Prada, Blahniks and all of what Manhattan's designer boutiques have
to offer, but for the present, it's time to savour what is left
and anticipate a heart-wrenching ending to Sex and the City.
I don't know about you, but I'll have my bunch of girlfriends to
huddle with me and have a good cry over the final episode of what
is the best thing (or show) on television. Cheers.
