Kaya Mania
There’s nothing plainer than a slice of toast with a generous spread of lip-smackingly smooth, traditional kaya [coconut and egg jam]. But what if we told you that it’ll probably taste better flavoured with lemon?

Before you get skeptical, wait till you hear more of the ingenious kaya creations that have been brewing under a roof in Serangoon. UrbanWire sets out to introduce your tastebuds to a tantalising time at The Kaya.

The shop’s low-hung lamps and cement-flooring are as bare as the fare is simple. The Kaya appears to be the perfect place to “slowly enjoy your snacks, drink coffee, [and] chit chat,” says Henry Seet, the amicable and friendly boss of this family business, which is co-owned by his sister.

Kaya lover or not, you’ll be impressed by the assortment of different flavours neatly packed in plastic containers and displayed beside the counter. However, don’t be fooled by the humble simplicity of this less-than-a-month old eatery. The affordably priced (from $2 up) egg-ladened delicacy doesn’t fail to impress in terms of quality and quantity.

With 5 different flavours of handmade kaya – sweet potato, yam, lemon, gula melaka (coconut candy) and, not forgetting, traditional – you’ll be spoilt for choice. The confusion can pay off, however, because you’ll get to sample each of them before choosing your preferred flavour to spread on those amazingly crisp and light thinly-sliced slices of toast.

Our choice pick, which coincidentally, is also a hot favourite among The Kaya’s customers, is the lemon kaya. Made with lemon curd (a popular spread among Britons) and splashed with a tinge of zesty orange rind, this palatably smooth lemon kaya offers your senses a perfect balance between the sweet and the sour. Yum.

Another delightful flavour is the yam kaya. As a yam paste fanatic, I found it undeniably mouthwatering. The smooth texture would certainly whet one’s appetite. You needn’t even have to spread this on toast; it’s splendid on its own but could be disastrous on your waistline.

Those with a sweet tooth should make a beeline for the sweet potato and gula melaka flavoured kaya. These 2 flavours, however, were a tad too sweet for my liking. But kids would definitely adore these wickedly sinful sweet spreads.

If you’re a sucker for the original and don’t really fancy the different flavours then I suggest you stick with the traditional kaya, which leaves a rich aftertaste. You won’t be disappointed.

The treat, 2 slices of toast with your preferred choice of kaya, is sold at an affordable $2, just 20% more expensive than the ones sold at Ya Kun’s. You can also bring home your favourite flavour at $4.50 per (220g) container.

Beyond Breakfast Delights
Besides serving unforgettable kaya, The Kaya also has other delectable dishes such as the Spaghetti and Baked Rice (each priced at $6.50). Their Spaghetti is colourfully bejeweled with a generous amount of green, yellow and red bell peppers, bacon bits and pepperoni - a perfect dish for health-conscious diners. The homemade sauce that adorns their spaghetti isn’t like most thick tomato ketchup-like pasta sauce; this dish is light yet sufficient to fill up an empty stomach.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you about the scrumptious-looking oven-baked Baked Rice and. Once you dig in, you can’t stop. The appeal of melted cheese with shitake mushroom and chunky chicken pieces is simply irresistible. The melted cheese gravy seeps perfectly into the rice, allowing the starchy grains to exude a fragrance that makes this dish a must-try.

The Ultimate Thirst-Quencher
Skip the regular coffee and tea for their invigorating Fresh Juice Shake ($3). This thirst-quenching drink, perfect on really hot days, is a concoction of lemon, honey and some unknown syrup. One sip and you’ll feel rejuvenated.

The Verdict
The only downside to this eatery is its location. However, the heavenly allure of the different flavours of kaya and other more substantial food at affordable prices (no service charge and no GST) is definitely worth the trip. Also, the excellent personal service by the boss himself really attracts customers.
